Party Girl Diet Survival Guide Tip #1: Get Your Beauty Sleep to Manage “Hunger Control” Hormones!

Wouldn’t it be grand if all we had to do was take a nice nap or get a good night’s sleep to loose those unwanted pounds? Just think about it – you - all snuggled up under a cozy down comforter, dreaming about that Fiji Island getaway you want to take – all the while loosing those last few stubborn pounds while you snooze – I’m ready to crash right now – how about you?  While there are reports one can in actuality lose weight while they sleep depending on how much they ate and exercised that day, this article explores how sleep, or the lack of it – can effect our appetite and hunger suppression hormones.

While no promises are being made that you will loose weight “overnight” – let’s take a look at some of the most compelling intel out there on this topic starting with research supporting claims that getting inadequate sleep can have an effect on a person’s weight – and not in a good way.

There is documented research to support that sleep deprivation can wreak havoc with a person’s hormones – specifically leptin and ghrelin. Simply put, Leptin is released into the bloodstream by Adipocytes (our fat cells) to signal to the brain we have sufficient fat stores - in this scenario, leptin acts as a natural appetite suppressor. The stomach releases ghrelin when it is empty to signal hunger.  So – when a person gets less sleep than their body needs – this sleep deprivation lowers the levels of leptin and raises levels of ghrelin.   This spiralling down process creates a one-two hormone punch that makes you want to eat more because the brain is getting signals that the body is starving, so you crave food.

The growing body of research on the relationship between the “lack of sleep and weight gain” suggests that if you are one of the millions of people looking to shed a few pounds, understanding how the amount of sleep you get and how the lack of it effects your hunger control hormones is a good place to start when looking for easy and natural ways to work with your body and honor its needs…so your body will in turn work with you – and honor yours…sweet dreams!
